Historical Attributes of Fernandina Beach

Amelia Island is named for Amelia, the daughter of King George II of England. Over the past 450 years and more, many peoples sought out the region now known as the City of Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island. They have left behind a unique and diverse cultural fabric. Amelia Island is located south of Cumberland Island on the south end of the Sea Islands. The Timucuan bands of Native Americans left mounds, a sign of their presence on Napoyca (Amelia Island).

In 1562, Jean Ribault, a French Huguenot explorer, claimed the island and named it Isle de Mai. However, a few years later, Pedro Menendez de Aviles of Spain conquered hundreds of French colonists and claimed the territory at Isla de Santa Maria.

Spanish Franciscans established the Santa Maria Mission and kept it going until 1680 when they left. British raids on St. Catherine’s Island in Georgia forced missionaries there to move to the Santa Maria Mission. However, in 1702, South Carolina invaded Florida with British/Indian troops and the mission was again abandoned.

Florida Condo Sales
After the Treaty of Paris in 1763, Florida was awarded to Britain but at the end of the Revolutionary Way, Florida returned to the Spanish flag. The town of Fernandina, was platted in 1811, and named in honor of King Ferdinand VII of Spain. Nonetheless, the Patriots of Amelia Island seized the island until the Spanish forced American evacuations in 1813 and built Fort San Carlos on the island. American Patriots of the Green Cross of Florida seized the fort and flew the Mexican rebel flag until U.S. President James Monroe vowed to hold Amelia Island in trust for Spain.

Confederates tool control in 1861 before Florida seceded from the Union but Union forces restored the United States flag over the island on March 3, 1862. In January 1863 at Fernandina, the Emancipation Proclamation was read to the first regiment of former slaves who fought for the Union.
